Pioneering T-Shirt Printing

Pioneering T-Shirt Printing

by Marga Sykes

Did you know that the omnipresent and hip T-shirt you are wearing comes from a long heralded history? T-shirt printing dates as far back as the 1700s and initiates from Western Europe. Although the printing method was first off introduced by the Asians, Europeans innovated on the prime printing system further by printing onto other surfaces, including decorative wall papers, linen and silk, thus the evolution of "silk screen printing."

T-shirt, on the other hand, started from the one-piece union suit which used to cover the body from shoulders to toes. People cut this version of undergarment into half, thus making the t-shirt. Although the t-shirts are still worn as undergarments today, especially the plain white ones, printed t-shirts are now worn as outer garments and for different social functions and purposes.

Printing in Europe developed speedily from the 1900s to the 1960s, with names such as Roy Beck, Charles Peter, and Edward Owens formulating the first photo-imaged stencil in 1910. This early method combined chromic acid salts which produced the emulsion. This was the forerunner of large format silk screen printing.

Another man named Joseph Ulanos started the mechanisation of the large format silk screen printing through his lacquer soluble stencil. This developed a solid base to make screens which could then be made into stencils. With the stencils, mass production of the print material was feasible.

The founding of the primitive printing technology indeed brought about more works of imaginative brains to get printed, read, and distributed abroad. In modern days, the printing technology has been applied to other media, to include the now dominant t-shirt printing.

Today, there are many t-shirt printing companies in the world marketing t-shirts with stunning and lasting prints. Aside from those ready on the shops, people can also order custom-designed t-shirt printing for many affairs either in the family or at work. T-shirt printing is in use in schools for uniforms and in industrial sites and other business organisations for work uniforms. It can also be used for fun.
